RESUMEN

Adhesives are used extensively in the wood industry. As resource and environmental issues become increasingly severe, the development of green and sustainable biomass-based adhesives has attracted increasing attention. In this work, a green wood adhesive is developed from poly(vinyl alcohol) and lignin with molecular designs of lignin extending beyond those in nature. The lignin undergoes extraction from corncob residue, aldehydration, and phenolisation (phenol, resorcinol, and catechol) to significantly increase the phenolic hydroxyl groups (over 7.92 mmol/g), which has the effect of enhancing the hydrogen bonding force between the adhesive and the wood, thereby greatly improving adhesive performance. Compared with pure PVA, polyphenol lignin-containing PVA showed improved adhesion strength and hydrophobicity. PVA/resorcinol-lignin has the significantly improved wood lap shear strength (6.27 MPa, 77.6 % improvement) and hydrophobicity (almost 100 % increase in wet shear strength). This research not only provides a green and high-performance alternative raw material for wood adhesives but also broadens the path for large-scale application of biomass.

RESUMEN

Anoikis is a specific form of programmed cell death induced by the loss of cell contact with the extracellular matrix and other cells, and plays an important role in organism development, tissue homeostasis, disease development and tumor metastasis. We comprehensively investigated the expression patterns of anoikis-related genes (ARGs) in kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) from public databases. Anoikis-related prognostic signatures were established based on four ARGs expression, in which KIRC patients were assigned different risk scores and divided into two different risk groups. In addition, four ARGs expression was validated by qRT-PCR. A better prognosis was observed in the low-risk group, but with lower immune activity (including immune cells and immune-related functions) in the tumor microenvironment. Combined with the relevant clinical characteristics, a nomogram for clinical application was established. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) and calibration curves were constructed to demonstrate the predictive power of this risk signature. In addition, higher risk scores were significantly and positively correlated with higher gene expression of tumor mutation load (TMB), immune checkpoints (ICPs) and mismatch repair (MMR)-related proteins in general. The results also suggested that the high-risk group was more sensitive to immunotherapy and certain chemotherapeutic agents. Anoikis-related prognostic signatures may provide a better understanding of the roles of ARGs and offer new perspectives for clinical prognosis and individualized treatment.

RESUMEN

Biological aging biomarkers, such as leukocyte telomere length (LTL) and epigenetic clocks, have been associated with the risk of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) in several observational studies. However, it is unclear whether LTL or epigenetic clocks play causal roles as prognostic biomarkers in the development of CSVD. We performed a Mendelian randomization (MR) study of LTL and four epigenetic clocks on ten subclinical and clinical CSVD measures. We obtained genome-wide association (GWAS) data for LTL from the UK Biobank (N = 472,174). Data on epigenetic clocks were derived from a meta-analysis (N = 34,710), and CSVD data (N cases =1293-18,381; N controls = 25,806-105,974) were extracted from the Cerebrovascular Disease Knowledge Portal. We found that genetically determined LTL and epigenetic clocks were not individually associated with ten measures of CSVD (IVW p > 0.05), and this result was consistent across sensitivity analyses. Our findings imply that LTL and epigenetic clocks may not help in predicting CSVD development as causal prognostic biomarkers. Further studies are needed to illustrate the potential of reverse biological aging in serving as an effective form of preventive therapy for CSVD.

RESUMEN

Background: Textural features of the hippocampus in structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) images can serve as potential diagnostic biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease (AD), while exhibiting a relatively poor discriminant performance in detecting early AD, such as amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). In contrast to sMRI, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can identify brain functional abnormalities in the early stages of cerebral disorders. However, whether the textural features reflecting local functional activity in the hippocampus can improve the diagnostic performance for AD and aMCI remains unclear. In this study, we combined the textural features of the amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) in the slow-5 frequency band and structural images in the hippocampus to investigate their diagnostic performance for AD and aMCI using multimodal radiomics technique. Methods: Totally, 84 AD, 50 aMCI, and 44 normal controls (NCs) were included in the current study. After feature extraction and feature selection, the radiomics models incorporating sMRI images, ALFF values and their combinations in the bilateral hippocampus were established for the diagnosis of AD and aMCI. The effectiveness of these models was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. The radiomics models were further validated using the external data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database. Results: The results of ROC analysis showed that the radiomics models based on structural images in the hippocampus had a better diagnostic performance for AD compared with the models using ALFF, while the ALFF-based model exhibited better discriminant performance for aMCI than the models with structural images. The radiomics models based on the combinations of structural images and ALFF were found to exhibit the highest accuracy for distinguishing AD from NCs and aMCI from NCs. Conclusion: In this study, we found that the textural features reflecting local functional activity could improve the diagnostic performance of traditional structural models for both AD and aMCI. These findings may deepen our understanding of the pathogenesis of AD, contributing to the early diagnosis of AD.

RESUMEN

Microbial contamination is a persistent problem for grain industry. Many studies have shown that radio frequency (RF) heating can effectively reduce pathogens populations in low moisture foods, but there is a lack on the efficacy to decontaminate natural microbiome. The main objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of different RF heating conditions on natural microbial populations and physicochemical properties of buckwheat. In this study, 30 buckwheat samples collected from 10 different Provinces in China were analyzed for their microbial loads, and the samples with the highest microbial populations were used for further study to select the suitable RF heating conditions. The results showed that microbial loads in tested buckwheat kernels were in the range of 3.4-6.2 log CFU/g. Samples from Shanxi (SX-3) had significantly higher microbial counts than other samples. The selected four temperature-time combinations: 75 °C-20 min, 80 °C-10 min, 85 °C-5 min, and 90 °C-0 min of RF heating could reduce microbial counts to <3.0 log CFU/g in buckwheat kernels at 16.5% w.b. moisture content. Furthermore, the reduction populations of the inoculated pathogens (Salmonella Typhimurium, Escherichia coli, Cronobacter sakazakii, and Bacillus cereus) reached 4.0 log CFU/g under the above conditions, and almost 5.0 log CFU/g especially at high temperature-short holding time combinations (85 °C-5 min and 90 °C-0 min). Besides, physicochemical properties evaluation also showed the insignificant color changes and nutrients loss after RF treatment at 90 °C-0 min. Therefore, the RF heating at 90 °C-0 min holds greater potential than the other lower temperature-longer holding time combinations for applications in buckwheat pasteurization.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of oral hydration volume to weight ratio (OHV/W) on contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) among patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS: A total of 754 patients with STEMI undergoing PCI were selected. Each patient was encouraged to drink as much water as possible 24 h after PCI. Total volume intake was recorded for all patients. The ratio of OHV/W was calculated. The occurrence of CI-AKI was defined as ≥0.5 mg/dL absolute or ≥25% relative increase in serum creatinine within 48-72 h following PCI. Logistic regression analysis and generalized additive model were performed to evaluate the relationship between OHV/W and CI-AKI. RESULTS: There was a nonlinear relationship between OHV/W and CI-AKI with an inflection point of 15.69 mL/kg. On the right side of the inflection point (OHV/W ≥15.69 mL/kg), a negative relationship was detected between OHV/W and CI-AKI (HR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.82∼0.98, p = 0.0126). However, no relationship was observed between OHV/W and CI-AKI on the left of inflection point (HR = 1.19, 95% CI: 0.95∼1.49, p = 0.1302). Subgroup analysis showed that significant interactions were observed only for gender difference (p for interaction = 0.0155), male patients had a significantly lower risk of CI-AKI (HR = 0.84, 95% CI: 0.75∼0.93, p = 0.0012). CONCLUSION: OHV/W ≥15.6 mL/kg for 24 h post-procedure may be an effective preventive strategy of CI-AKI. In addition, male patients may particularly benefit from OHV to prevent CI-AKI.

RESUMEN

Tahini and tahini-based products are popular with consumers due to their special flavor and high nutritional values, but often have been linked to Salmonella outbreaks. The objective of this study was to compare effects of different kinds of natural antimicrobials on Salmonella inactivation in undiluted and diluted tahini during thermal treatment and storage. Results showed that the Weibull model was more suitable to describe the thermal inactivation behavior of S. montevideo CICC21588 in two kinds of tahini than the first-order model. Inactivation curves were concave-upward in undiluted tahini but concave-downward in diluted tahini. During storage of undiluted tahini, 3% oregano oil caused extra 1.44 or 0.80 log CFU/g reductions after 7 days at 25 °C or 4 °C compared to the control and 0.5% citric acid caused an extra reduction of 0.75 log CFU/g after 7 d at 4 °C. For diluted tahini, 2-3% oregano oil and 0.4-0.5% ε-polylysine reduced more populations compared to undiluted tahini. These antimicrobials all inhibited the growth of S. montevideo during 24 h at 25 °C and ε-polylysine had the best effect. Furthermore, these antimicrobials enhanced the Salmonella inactivation in diluted tahini during thermal treatment, and there was less of a synergistic effect of thermal and antimicrobials in undiluted tahini due to less sublethal injured cells caused by heat. This study may provide useful information for Salmonella inactivation in tahini.

RESUMEN

Nonpathogenic surrogate microorganisms, with a similar or slightly higher thermal resistance of the target pathogens, are usually recommended for validating practical pasteurization processes. The aim of this study was to explore a surrogate microorganism in wheat products by comparing the thermal resistance of three common bacteria in wheat kernels and flour. The most heat-resistant Enterococcus faecium NRRL-2356 rather than Salmonella cocktail and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 was determined when heating at different temperature-time combinations at a fixed heating rate of 5 °C/min in a heating block system. The most heat-resistant pathogen was selected to investigate the influences of physical structures of food matrices. The results indicated that the heat resistance of E. faecium was influenced by physical structures of food matrices and reduced at wheat kernel structural conditions. The inactivation of E. faecium was better fitted in the Weibull distribution model for wheat dough structural conditions while in first-order kinetics for wheat kernel and flour structural conditions due to the changes of physical structures during heating. A better pasteurization effect could be achieved in wheat kernel structure in this study, which may provide technical support for thermal inactivation of pathogens in wheat-based food processing.

RESUMEN

Mutations in RNF216 have been found to be associated with autosomal recessive Huntington-like disorder. Here, we describe a patient with Huntington-like disorder caused by a novel de novo RNF216 mutation. The patient started to have choreatic movements of both hands, slowly progressing to head, face, and four extremities, with prominent cognitive deterioration. White matter lesions in cerebral hemispheres and brainstem, cerebellar atrophy, and low gonadotropin serum levels have been demonstrated. We have identified a homozygous deletion of exon 2 in the RNF216 gene by whole-exome sequencing. Our findings increased genetic knowledge of autosomal recessive Huntington-like disorder and extended the ethnic distribution of RNF216 mutations.

RESUMEN

OBJECTS: Different variations of the Stroop Color-Word Test (SCWT) exist and the tests differ in the number of items on each test card. The optimal number of items per card of the SCWT is unclear. METHODS: A comprehensive neuropsychological battery including the SCWT was administered to 237 cognitively normal controls (NC), 221 patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 160 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). We compared the accuracy for different items of card C (SCWT-C10accuracy, SCWT-C24accuracy, and SCWT-C50accuracy) in distinguishing patients with MCI and AD from NC. RESULTS: The correct responses for different items of card C were ranked in the order: NC > MCI > AD group and mild AD > moderate AD, except for SCWT-C24accuracy. The validity of SCWT-C24accuracy was similar to that of SCWT-C50accuracy for discriminating MCI and AD from NC, as well as different levels of AD. CONCLUSION: We concluded that the number of items on the accuracy of the response was unrelated to its sensitivity to deficits and we preferred the 24-item version in daily clinical use.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To revise an abbreviated version of the Silhouettes subtest of the Visual Object and Space Perception (VOSP) battery in order to recognize mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and determine the optimal cutoffs to differentiate among cognitively normal controls (NC), MCI, and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) in the Chinese elderly. DESIGN: A cross-sectional validation study. SETTING: Huashan Hospital, Shanghai, China. SUBJECTS: A total of 591 participants: Individuals with MCI (n = 211), AD (n = 139) and NC (n = 241) were recruited from the Memory Clinic, Huashan Hospital, Shanghai, China. METHODS: Baseline neuropsychological battery (including VOSP) scores were collected from firsthand data. An abbreviated version of silhouettes test (Silhouettes-A) was revised from the original English version more suitable for the elderly, including eight silhouettes of animals and seven silhouettes of inanimate objects, with a score ranging from 0 to 15. RESULTS: Silhouettes-A was an effective test to screen MCI in the Chinese elderly with good sensitivity and specificity, similar to the Montreal cognitive assessment and superior to other single tests reflecting language, spatial, or executive function. However, it had no advantage in distinguishing MCI from AD. The corresponding optimal cutoff scores of Silhouettes-A were 10 for screening MCI and 8 for AD. CONCLUSION: Silhouettes-A is a quick, simple, sensitive, and dependable cognitive test to distinguish among NC, MCI, and AD patients.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To find out whether the Chinese version of Montreal Cognitive Assessment Basic (MoCA-BC) and its subtests could be applied in discrimination among cognitively normal controls (NC), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), mild and moderate Alzheimer's Disease (AD), and furthermore, to determine the optimal cutoffs most sensitive to distinguish between them. DESIGN: A cross-sectional validation study. SETTING: Huashan Hospital, Shanghai, China. PARTICIPANTS: There was a total of 1,969 participants: individuals with MCI (n=663), mild (n=345), moderate (n=441) AD, and cognitively NC (n=520) were recruited from the Memory Clinic, Huashan Hospital, Shanghai, China. MEASUREMENTS: Baseline MoCA-BC scores were collected from firsthand data. Two subtests were calculated from MoCA-BC: the Memory Index Score of MoCA-BC (MoCA-BC-MIS) and the Non-memory Index Score of MoCA-BC (MoCA-BC-NM). RESULTS: MoCA-BC was an effective cognitive tool to discriminate among NC, MCI, mild and moderate AD in the Chinese elderly across all education groups, implying that it was efficient not only for detecting MCI, but for different severities of AD as well. For MCI screening, the total score of MoCA-BC (MoCA-BC-T) and MoCA-BC-MIS had similar high sensitivity and specificity. For discrimination among MCI, mild and moderate AD, the MoCA-BC-T and MoCA-BC-NM had similar performance. CONCLUSION: MoCA-BC is an effective cognitive test to distinguish between NC, MCI, mild and moderate AD among the Chinese elderly with various levels of education.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Previous literature has revealed that the anterior temporal lobe (ATL) is the semantic hub of left-sided or mixed semantic dementia (SD), whilst the semantic hub of right-sided SD has not been examined. Methods: Seventeen patients with right-sided SD, 18 patients with left-sided SD and 20 normal controls (NC) underwent neuropsychological assessments and magnetic resonance imaging scans. We investigated the relationship between the degree of cerebral atrophy in the whole brain and the severity of semantic deficits in left and right-sided SD samples, respectively. Results: We found the semantic deficits of right-sided SD patients were related to bilateral fusiform gyri and left temporal pole, whilst the left fusiform gyrus correlated with the semantic performance of left-sided SD patients. Moreover, all the findings couldn't be accounted for by total gray matter volume (GMV) or general cognitive degradation of patients. Discussion: These results provide novel evidence for the current semantic theory, that the important regions for semantic processing include both anterior and posterior temporal lobes.
